Canvas Tote Care: Five Years of Washing

A canvas tote should last a decade. Most die in the wash — not from dirt, but from heat and impatience.

Washing

  • Cold water, 30°C maximum. Hot water shrinks cotton and sets stains.
  • Turn it inside out. The seams take the abrasion, not the face.
  • Mild detergent, no bleach, no fabric softener (it coats the fibres and reduces absorbency).
  • Machine wash on a gentle cycle inside a pillowcase, or by hand if the bag has a printed graphic.

Drying

Reshape while wet — pull the base flat, straighten the handles — then air dry away from direct sun. Do not tumble dry. The dryer is what turns a structured tote into a rag with handles.

Stains

Blot, do not rub. Cold water first, then a drop of dish soap, then wait ten minutes before rinsing. Oil stains: a little cornstarch, left for an hour, then brushed off before washing.

Odour

Usually the base lining. A spray of diluted white vinegar, air dry, done. If it persists, the bag has been wet too long somewhere — check for mildew along the seams.

Repairs worth doing

A split seam at the handle is a ten-minute fix with heavy thread and a needle. Most people throw the bag away at that point; the bag has years left.

The rule

Wash less often than you think, always cold, never the dryer. That is 90% of it.
